Write an equation of a line in slope intercept form that is parallel to y = -3x+6 and passes through the points (2,-5)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Fist you need to take the negative reciprocal of the slope. The slope of your original equation is -3 there for the negative reciprocal is \[\frac{ 1 }{ 3 }\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i thought parallel is the same slope

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oops.. I read perpendicular... ok scratch that last post.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay so parallel... the slope is the same so you need to plug in 2 in for x and -5 in for y, but take out the +6 and make it +b.... so your equation will look like \[-5=-3(2)+b\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now solve for b...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

your answer should be b=1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now your new equation is y=-3x+1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks i understand it now

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i have another question similar to that but it is perpendicular. would i do the same process just change the slope

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep... you the negative reciprocal for the slope.
