I need someone to explain elliptical clauses to me. Examples would be helpful also!

An elliptical clause is a clause in which some words have been left out. Because of the pattern or logic of the entire sentence, it is clear what the missing words are.

Here's an example: Jessica had five dollars; Monica, three.

In my activity I am being asked questions like filling in the blank at the end of the sentence to make it an elliptical clause. Still confused...
