Simplify. 5(x - y) - (x - y)

OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

First, reorder the terms.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats how the question is asked

OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

to solve the problem, you will have to first reorder the terms.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[5\heartsuit -\heartsuit =4\heartsuit\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so \[5(x-y)-(x-y)=4(x-y)\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Answer Choices A)x - y B)x + y C)4x - 4y D)4x + 4y

OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

Pare you're going to work with me in order for me to help you, i know the answer, but i want you to lear how to do it.

OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

its really quite simple :)

OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

First, you'd have to reorder the terms, like this, 5x+-1x+1x+1y. now you combine like terms.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh wait would i distripute the 5 with the X-Y and then put a one before 1 before the other (X-Y) and then subract 5&4

OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

Umm possibly i dont really know that method :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the answer would be 4x-4y

OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

correct!

OpenStudy (ashleyisakitty):

good job

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks
