The ancient Indian game of Chaturanga—from which the modern game of chess was apparently derived—was played on a board with 64 squares. A certain folktale tells the story of a Raja who promised a reward of one grain of rice on the first square of the board, two grains on the second square, four on the third, and so on, doubling the number of grains on each successive square. see screenshot!!

@amistre64

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the first square is one and you times the amount of rice for each successive square by two, so you times one by two 64 times.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so one times 2 to the 64th power.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because there are 64 squares

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the first square is 2^0, so the 64th square is actually 2^63
