4y + 3 = 23

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y=5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But how do you do it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4y + 3 = 23 -3 -3 ------------ 4y = 20 y = 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

brandi2013? I don't understand where did you get the three how do you do it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what is this -3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The three was in the original equation. -3 means you subtract 3 from both sides

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what both sides?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4 and 23?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah from both sides of the equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but u take 4-3 is 1 not 5?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You subtract 3 from the 4y + 3 on the left side to make it just 4y. Then you also subtract 3 from 23 to make it 20 on the right side.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You can only do it to like terms. 4y is not a like term to 3 because it has a y on the end

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How is it 5 I understand that you take away but 4y take away 3 isn't 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay after you subtracted three from both sides you end up withi 4y = 20. Then you divide both sides by 4 to get the Y by itself. Making y = 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks
