Which ratio is equal? Having trouble. http://prntscr.com/1576bc

OpenStudy (anonymous):

16/20

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can you tell me why?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sure, multiply both numerator and denominator by 4 :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if you simplified 16/20, you would get what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I usually use the cross multipliation method 4/5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so two answers are proportional if they simplify to the same fraction. Does that help?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I understand your method. But can you do it using the cross multiplication method so I can see how that works?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[\frac{ 4 }{ 4 }* \frac{ 4 }{ 5 } = \frac{ 16 }{ 20 }\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But-b-but shouldn't you be able to do it\[\frac{4}{5} = \frac{16}{20}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

as 4/4 = 1, you are not changing your answer, only the factor by which it is being represented.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Butttt \[\frac{4}{5} = \frac{16}{20} = 4 * 20 -- 16 * 5, 80 = 80\] That's the cross multiplication way
