OpenStudy (nincompoop):

may I suggest an Ethics and related section?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmmm....

OpenStudy (aravindg):

I dont think its required here.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

uuhh, what !!? Guy's, talk about a bad answer !! By " Ethics and related section", I don't think @nincompoop was referring to a section where one talks about how to behave and be "nice" on OS. Yes its true that it's not required, but that begs the question: is anything required ? Just because it's not required, does not mean it's a bad idea. Actually, I agree. There should be an Ethics section, as well as other "philosophy/ thought provoking" sections, because they result in real thinking. To to actually think it's a good thing you know. And real thinking is much more then solving math problems, and much more difficult. Being a "study site", those subjects are as legitimate as any other. I would go so far as to say that they are actually the most important subjects, but in order to keep this post short, I won't go there. Nothing personal, so I'm not going to be coming back and forth here. I just expressed my opinion as everyone else does.

OpenStudy (zale101):

I believe philosophy section should be included because i'm taking it as a class and it's impossible for me to ask a question related to.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

When i was first introduced to this site by a friend of mine, the first two sections i looked for were chemistry and philosophy. I definitely think we should have one...thinking is the foundation of good judgment and if there's anything we need more of in today's society that is people who can think for themselves...

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

One of the things I have noticed is how dead some sections are. A few broad headings, like Philosophy to cover Epistemology, Ethics, Logic, Metaphysics, and so on would be good. So rather than an Ethics section that might or might not get much traffic, go for a Philosophy section that includes Ethics. Mathematics covers all sorts of different fields of mathematics. But if Linear Algebra was broken off mathematics and had to live on its own, it would rarely get any answers because people would not see the questions. Physical, Life, Social, and Applied sciences are other broad categories, but some of them might be too far reaching. Seeing industrial and computer questions under applied would be a little too far apart. So I do not mean huge headings like that, but still larger headings than several of the ones that are buried on the site, rarely to be seen by human eyes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I agree @avilesnba. That is why its needed so much. And @e.mccormick , the analogy to the physical sciences in terms of categories is a very good one.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

my first quarter in college i took Phil005:Critical Thinking, and man do i miss it. Moral absolutes, moral law and my personal favorite; Albert Camus' "life is absurd". Good stuff

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Well, there is one reason why a Philosophy section might not work.... ahem... think about the great questions of philosophy. There are questions that were asked about 3000 years ago and still sit unanswered. Descartes thought he had a bunch of answers, but only cogito ergo sum has withstood time, not the things it lead to. I mean, just think about it. Someone asks a deep, philosophical question and it sits for the next 500 years before getting a good response, only to be shot down 200 years later when someone pokes enough holes in the answer to make a sieve! Oh, and what if we get a collection of cynics? That would make it cheery.... or if everyone went to solipsism it might be really problematic for the social media aspects of the site!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Just because they go unanswered doesn't mean they should pass through time without being brought up again. Has the world really gone that berserk under the blankets of superficial society that we no longer can ponder about the great questions of life? sighh....

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Berserk? No, no... we have just become used to Google, Instant Rice, and 90 minute or shorter Action Films. Not many have the dedication left to contemplate something for weeks or years.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@e.mccormick , this is exactly why a philosophy group will indeed work,. We are discussing philosophy right now. Trying to answer quetions is not an option, we have no choice but to ponder, regardless of whether the answers are correct ( if such a thing as a "correct answer" exists ) Also, I'm inclined to believe that many people would visit the group. Some to post, and others just to see what is being said. By the way, a good example is what you mentioned about "solipsism". It's one of those things that, although it seems not to make sense, even Russell have to admite at the end that logic cannot disprove it, But I'll get back to that when I have a little more time.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

#TeAm Luis Rivera 4 LiFe haha

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Btw these are all nice arguments and awesome reasons + opinions :) @e.mccormick @Luis_Rivera @avilesnba

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Everybody should try solipsism. It works for me! And here I was having a philosophical argument against philosophy as a sort of reverse psychology as to why philosophy would be good and Luis has to come along and expose my evil experiment before it could come to fruition!

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

All of this does expose one other topic that is somewhat related, argumentation and debate. Rhetoric, as a systematic study of oral argument, has deep roots in philosophy. There are lots of things like this that could be rolled under the superheading of Philosophy. Mathematics was formally a subheading of Philosophy, as were physics and medicine and many more. However, I feel if would be good if the subheadings were restricted to topics of modern education that do not have a strong basis outside the real of philosophy or are closely related topics that may have their own basis but may still be under the umbrella of philosophy.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

...outside the real of philosophy... real... realm! That is what it was supposed to be.
