what does x and y mean in this equation -2x+y=5

I don't get it...?

This question seems a bit strangely worded. The variables, x and y, have not been assigned any specific context, so they are simply two variables in a relationship. In a sense, the best flat definition in terms of this equation would probably simply be writing y in terms of x and x in terms of y... So, in that case, you just solve for y for the 'definition' of y, and then solve for x in terms of y for the 'definition' of x.

they are variables you solve for them

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y=5+2x plug 5+2x in for y -2x+5+2x= 5 5=5 but from looking at it.....x=-2 and y=1

In essence the problem is y= 2x+5, because you can move the variable.
