OpenStudy (jhannybean):

perpendicular lines have opposites slopes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Move everything away from the y, isolate it. Once that is done, take the opposite reciprical.

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

So if you solve for y in the equation given, you get: \[3y = 5-x\]\[y=\frac{ 5-x }{ 3 }\]\[y= \frac{ 5 }{ 3 }-\frac{ x }{ 3 }\] rewrite. \[y=-\frac{ 1 }{ 3 }x+\frac{ 5 }{ 3 }\] Now you know the slope of the line given. if you take the reciprocal, you will have \[-3\]
