what is the surface area?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

You need to find the area of each surface, and sum them. You've got 3 rectangles and 2 triangle. Area of a rectangle is length * width, area of a triangle is 1/2 base * height.

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

The only moderately tricky part here is visualizing the dimensions of the back side of the prism.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it 42m2

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

that seems a little low, given that the area of the front face is 5 m*7 m= 35 m^2...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

42 is the lowest option i have and 117 is the highest.

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

You've got the big front face, 5x7. You've got the 2 end triangles with base 3 and height 4. You've got the bottom face, which is 3x7. Finally, you've got the back face with is 4x7. We get the 4 from the height of the triangles, and because the front face is a rectangle with 7 along the bottom and top, we know that the back face must also be 7 along bottom and top.

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

If 1 of the 5 sides takes up 35 m^2 all by itself, and another side is nearly as large, 42 m^2 isn't going to be a likely correct answer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the highest the multiple choice will go is 117 see. forty-two square meters forty-five square meters ninety-six square meters one hundred seventeen square meters

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

It doesn't matter what choices you have — you have all the information you need to figure out the answer.

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

Find the area of a a 5x7 rectangle (front face). Find the area of a 3x7 rectangle (bottom face). Find the area of a 4x7 rectangle (back face). Find the area of 2 triangles with base 3 and height 4 (2 ends). Add them up. You'll find the result is on the list of choices.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

84m2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well oh well ill just guess....

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

No need to guess. This is simple arithmetic. What is 5*7? What is 3*7? What is 4*7? What is 2 * 1/2 * 3 * 4? What do you get when you add them up?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok thnx....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

96m2

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

There you go!

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

I think you forgot to add the 2 triangles when you came up with 84 m^2, right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no
