How do I find the square root of 169?

Parth (parthkohli):

You can see and tell that it is \(\pm 13\)

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

just divide 169 by 13 because 13*13 equals 169.

OpenStudy (jack1):

for another way, look up "Newton-Raphson" method... long winded but will work out all square roots for you, eg sqrt 3, sqrt 168

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How would I find out that it's 13x13?

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

square roots are just something i memorize

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is that the only way? to memorize?

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

or there is also jack's way, but it is very long winded

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:c

OpenStudy (jack1):

guesstimating you know 10^2 = 100, so must be bigger you know 15^5 = 225, so must be smaller, leaves a range of 4 possibilities

OpenStudy (hunus):

Also, you know that it must end with either a three or a seven. And since you know it has to be greater than 10 and less than 15 your only choice is 13

OpenStudy (jack1):

or you could get a pile of 169 rocks, and see how many even piles of the same number of rocks as piles you can split them in to...?

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

jack that would take a lot of time lol :)

OpenStudy (aonz):

type in calculator derp?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

13
