OpenStudy (anonymous):

dont know how to use a graphing calc

OpenStudy (anonymous):

one way to look at this is letting x = rate of first mechanic and y = rate of second mechanic. rate = price/hour --> price = hour * rate 15x + 5y = 1200 x + y = 130

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so now what?

OpenStudy (compassionate):

You want to solve using the elimination method 15x + 5y = 1200 x + y = 130 You want to multiply the bottom equation by either negative five to cancel y or negative 15 to cancel x.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 1200=15+5*y?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you use substitution; easier to start with the second line and re-arranging it to : y = 130 - x. this is plugged in the first: 15x + 5(130 - x) = 1200

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 10x+650=1200?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and then its 55?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but thats whose rate?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the first guy, who worked 15 hours

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay so how do i get the second? by plugging in the 15 in the y?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

by using x + y = 130

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 55+5=130?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait that is not right lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so x=55 right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes x = 55

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay so 55+y=130 right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y=75?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so X=55 Y=75

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks
