please help me :( graph the function y=|x|-3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1369444108390:dw| this is what y=lxl looks like you gotta shift the corner to the left by 3 units

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but how do you knowww that. like how do you know what the coordinates are

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y=lxl means, y=x, y=-x just begin from the origin and your gonna get the graph i've shown above and -3 to that means shifting graph by three units to the left and if it was +3 then that means shifting it to the right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1369444277148:dw| it would be like this

OpenStudy (anonymous):

actually \(y=|x+3|\) shifts left 3 units

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\(y=|x|-3\) shifts DOWN 3 units

If you are not sure, then it is always a good idea to create some sample points, e.g. in this case you could try the following x values. -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3 And plot those points, that will give you an idea what the graph looks like
