Who were the philosophes?
Hobbes --> thought people naturally hate eacher and need to be controlled by a dictator to obtain peace. thought that people were naturally selfish and would use violent means to get what they want Locke--> thought people were naturally peaceful and didn't need the government to control their every move. he thought that human behavior was changable and is dependent on their environment. he also believed that people were not born with original sin; but that everyone is born equal. he's a cornor stone of our society. Montesquieu known for Spirit of Laws Rousseau: strange and isolated genious. hated the world and society in which he lived. made the Social Contract (outlined the political structure that he thought would overcome evils of contemporary politics and society also hated women. i don't have all the info on me right now because these are just notes that i took from last year but here are a list of the main philosophes: Voltaire (religious freedom) Montisquieu (government checks and balances) Diderot (1st editor of encyclopedia, secularized knowledge) Beccaria (punishment that will fit crime) Smith (laissez-fair economics... people being selfish can better society economically) Herder (treat all people fairly) Locke (religious toleration, freedom of speech, no absolute rule, laissez-fair economics, fair court system) Hobbes (opposite of Locke) I hope this helps(:

@trumpetmaster7777 , haha sometimes yahoo answers can be a great resource! It says things in ways that are easy to understand, which can be awesome. I mean, you might not want to cite it for a research paper, but it can be a good place to og off of. :)
yes, but I'm curious why @juliawhitneyy didn't just type it in google in the first place. Instead of wasting our time, she could have immediately had the answer.
Everyone learns in different ways. Some people are very comfortable researching on their own, but others need a little help. That's why we're here at OpenStudy! :D Nobody is wasting time by asking a question. That's how we learn. Besides, that's why we're here to answer questions! :)
