f(x)=(x^3)+3(x^2)-9x+5 in factored form ?

OpenStudy (rulnick):

f(x) = (x-1)^2 (x+5)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I understand the (x+5) part but not the other...

OpenStudy (rulnick):

OK. It's (x-1) (x-1) (x+5). This becomes (x^2-2x+1) (x+5).

OpenStudy (rulnick):

The result is x^3-2x^2+x + 5x^2-10x+5. Combine like terms to get the original f(x).

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

\[x^3+3x^2-9x+5\] can be factored by noting that the factors of 5 are 1 and 5. That means that the binomials multiplied together (the factors) must end in 1, 5, -1, or -5.

oh I was trying to approach it like this but I guess it doesn't work..|dw:1369611776143:dw|
