Evaluate. gh - k when g = -6, h = 15, and k = -27

OpenStudy (anonymous):

gh - k = (-6)(15) - (-27) can you do it further???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Um, From this point I would multiply -6 and 15? And then subtract negative 27?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes exactly

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The answer is 63?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yap

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I just Googled (-90) - (-27) and the answer is -63. But when I did it on paper I got positive 63. I thought two negatives made a positive when subtracting, what am I doing wrong?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no you got it wrong, you have to put the sign of greater number with the result

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is that an algebraic rule?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes its a rule

OpenStudy (kenljw):

gh - k = (-6)(15) - (-27) -3[(2 15) - (9)] = 9 [2 (-5) + 3} = -63 I first factor -3 then factor another -3 thereby simplifying calculation
