How is Brutus in the play Julius Caesar a hero?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how is he a tragic hero?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that's what I'm asking....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, he is the only one with noble intentions. Brutus may have taken part in a conspiracy but he is the only one to do so "for the good of the republic".

any other reasons? I need to write a 1000 words on it! :P [for a speech]

Though the play is titled Julius Caesar, the play focuses more on Brutus....his character, his emotions, his internal conflicts, his mind....these are what the play is more concerned on......Julius Caesar dies in the 3rd act, scene 1...there are a total of 5 acts in the play.....Brutus was an idealist,a scholar and a man driven by principles....a stoic to the core....however his very beleifs often led him to take wrong decisions .....Cassius is often presented as a foil to Brutus, the schemer, one who thinks clearly and capable of making decisions....However , he too makes one mistake...that was to trust Brutus' decisions and let them override his own.....thus leading to their very downfall.....The main mistaken judgements of Brutus are 1.not including Cicero in their group of conspirators 2.deciding not to kill Mark Antony 3.deciding to advance their army to Philippi to meet that of octavius and Antony.....From beginning to end, it is Brutus who is portrayed as the main character...though his desire to save Rome failed....his love for Rome was far greater than that for his dear friend and he beleived that Caesar's life was a fitting sacrifice for his country's sake...thogh he could neither see nor understand the fact that his people needed a leader...someone to admire and look up to....yet despite all these faults he was a true and noble human being whose love for his country and his people is a worthy subject for a play as great as 'Julius caesar'
