OpenStudy (mackenzie2013):

Can someone walk me through this ? Evaluate the expression: |8| - 2 x |-3| + 4 6 22 10 42

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally 1. Step one would be to get rid of the X.. hold on don't you have the equals sign? One of your answer would have to have X in it.

OpenStudy (hunus):

First convert all of the absolute values to the positive version of that number

OpenStudy (mackenzie2013):

Yep !

OpenStudy (hunus):

First replace all of the absolute values with the positive version of that number

OpenStudy (mackenzie2013):

ok

OpenStudy (hunus):

\[|8|-2\times|-3|+4=8-2\times3+4\] And then you just follow the order of operations

OpenStudy (mackenzie2013):

I dont think im doing something right i keep getting 2 as my answer

OpenStudy (hunus):

First you're going to multiply -2 by 3 P - Parentheses E - Exponent MD - Multiplication/division AS - Addition/subtraction

OpenStudy (mackenzie2013):

ok i did that

OpenStudy (hunus):

Then you will have 8 -6 + 4

OpenStudy (mackenzie2013):

so according to PEMDAS I would take -6 and add 4 which would equal -10

OpenStudy (hunus):

addition and subtraction have the same precedence so you just go from left to right

OpenStudy (hunus):

-6 + 4 would be -2 If you have -6 on a number line and went to the right 4 spaces you would land on -2 |dw:1369778543598:dw|

OpenStudy (mackenzie2013):

oh! ok No wonder it wasnt right ! THANKS !

OpenStudy (hunus):

Yup :)
