Find f(g(-2) if f(x)=x^2 -5 and g(x) =3x^2+1

OpenStudy (reemii):

compute first \(g(-2)\). this a value \(a\). then compute \(f(a)\). that's all.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got 164

OpenStudy (reemii):

it's correct.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have more problems if you could help

OpenStudy (reemii):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ill upload a photo of the questions, their all mutiple choice too

OpenStudy (reemii):

im ready… (but you are the one who computes ;))

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

These are the ones I need help with

OpenStudy (reemii):

choose a question for which you'd like some explanation, say what you did about it so I can adapt the answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Lets start from the top

OpenStudy (anonymous):

For this I got f(x)-2x-4

OpenStudy (reemii):

for the first question I recommend you write \(y=2x-4\) and try to transform this to obtain an equation of the form \(x = ...\). that will give you the expression of \(f^{-1}\). if you did not have an answer yet, do that and then say what you got.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Were just supposed to find the inverse

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Not solve

OpenStudy (reemii):

what's your answer? try to write the steps too.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it was C

OpenStudy (anonymous):

look at the photo

OpenStudy (reemii):

it's not C. you need to remember what is \(f^{-1}\). given a function \(f\) that sends x's and y's, the function \(f^{-1}\) is the function that finds which x is associated with which x. So you must "invert" the function. That means, from an equation of the form "y = stuff with x" you need to get an equation of the form "x = stuff with y". this expression is actually \(f^{-1}(y)\).

OpenStudy (reemii):

typo: which x is associated with which y.

OpenStudy (reemii):

y = 2x - 4 is the starting point. the next step to the equation "x = ..." is the equation: y + 4 = 2x. ok? continue this job and give the answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got A

OpenStudy (reemii):

hmm. what is the step after "y+4 = 2x" ?
