Can someone PLEASE Help me understand what it's asking! http://prntscr.com/17bmwk

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What is the ~ mark?

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

and the upside down U?

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

i thought ~ was a negating symbol.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Does anyone have any pointers on how to solve this?

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

Yes, if you tell me what the upside down U means, lol

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

Oh, okay that means intersection of the two sets.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's intercetion right? It means like, if I had set A and B. A = [1 , 4] and B: [1, 7], the intercetion would be

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

yes :)

OpenStudy (reemii):

is it (~J) intersection S or ~(J intersection S) ?

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

So first you look at (~ J intersecting S) you take out ALL parts that have J in them because on the elft hand side, we have " ~ J" so we disregard the 21, the 84 AND 232

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

then we look at union "U" of that first part and B

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So ~J Intersection S, means I take all the parts in J that are in S?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh, so I take only parts J and S have in them?

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

we disregard the 52 and 21 because we don't want to include J in our answer.We add 196 + 41 + 133

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

~J means negating J, means that you DO NOT want to include J in your answer. So wherevr J is, take that out.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And a union means, whatever is in J and S we leave in?

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

union means whatever is left in the area where J hasn't touched

OpenStudy (reemii):

the set ((~J) AND S) contains 41+133 elements. Then you add the other 196+52 points of B that you did not count yet.

OpenStudy (dan815):

i liikee stats

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

|dw:1369870216091:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So 44 and 133

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

Reemmii you're not going to add in 52 because that's a part of J that we do not want to include.

OpenStudy (reemii):

i forgot 21, but you have to count 52.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So (~J Union S) Everything outside of J, and only the things that are in both sets of J and S? Huh, that doesn't make sense.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I get the !J, but the union of S confused me.

OpenStudy (reemii):

first: (~J) inter S: |dw:1369870461082:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What does intercept S mean?

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

NOT J intersecting S

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wouldn't it be, everything outside of J, and only things that are in both S and B, which is just 41.

OpenStudy (reemii):

then , the union wiht B means, you have to count the points all points of B (without counting twice the ones that are already part of B), so you add 196, 21 and 52.

OpenStudy (reemii):

the answer will be 443.

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

YES 41, 133 and 194

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

i don't understand why you're adding 52 when you don't want to include J???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait, waahhttt. I'm still on J~ Inter S. What the does Inter S mean?

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

@jim_thompson5910 please come in here :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This is what I'm using http://www.purplemath.com/modules/venndiag2.htm

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If someone could just explain the first part to me.. yeah.. that'll be great.

OpenStudy (reemii):

there's a little annoying thing with the image in the question, we don't see clearly if it is (~J)inter S or ~(J inter S). I'm pretty sure it's the first one, otherwise the answer is not in the proposed values.

OpenStudy (reemii):

(~J) is all that's not in J: |dw:1369870781184:dw|
