o i forgot @jim_thompson5910
OpenStudy (jdoe0001):
same thing as jim_thompson5910 already showed you, same equation he used, just make the "a" negative :)
OpenStudy (anonymous):
ok
OpenStudy (jdoe0001):
let's see, for a parabola whose vertex is (2, -4)
$$
(\color{red}{h},\color{blue}{k}) \implies (\color{red}{x},\color{blue}{y}) \implies
(\color{red}{2},\color{blue}{-4})\\
\text{a point value given is } (-3,-3)\\
-3=-a(-3-\color{blue}{(-4)})^2+\color{red}{(2)}\\
$$
from there just solve for "a", positive "a" that is :)

i thought it was supposed to be a negative a?
OpenStudy (jdoe0001):
it's, the horizontal parabola is opening leftward
OpenStudy (jdoe0001):
for the equation is a negative "a", or "-a", but you want to find "a", then slap it with a minus :)
OpenStudy (anonymous):
so it changes to a -3=-a(-3+4))=2?
OpenStudy (jdoe0001):
well, what would be in say \(-a(-3+4)^2\)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):
yea
OpenStudy (jdoe0001):
so, what would that part give you?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
-a(1)^2
OpenStudy (jdoe0001):
right, so that part becomes -a, because \(1^2 =1\) and -a*1 =-a, so the equation becomes
-3 = -a +2
solving for "a" what would that give?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
-1?

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):
-1?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
idk;(
OpenStudy (jdoe0001):
ok, lemme put it this way
3 = a - 2
what would "a" give you?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
add 3 to both sides?
OpenStudy (jdoe0001):
we're under the assumption you know how to factor :S

caz that gave me 1
OpenStudy (jdoe0001):
well, if you add 3 to both sides, you'd get
6 = a + 5
OpenStudy (jdoe0001):
not
OpenStudy (jdoe0001):
6 = a +1
OpenStudy (anonymous):
ughhh
