sorry for the wait. In 1988, The Congress passed a legislation apologizing for the internment on behalf of the US Govt, signed by the then President Ronald Reagan. The legislation stated “race prejudice, war hysteria, and a failure of political leadership" as the basis for Govt actions. The U.S. government disbursed more than $1.6 billion to the affected Japanese Americans as compensation in conformity with the spirit of legislation. President Franklin D. Roosevelt had authorized the internment with Executive Order 9066, issued 2/19/1942 which allowed local military commanders to designate "military areas" as "exclusion zones," from which "any or all persons may be excluded." This power entitled the military to exclude all people of Japanese ancestry from the entire Pacific coast, all of California and much of Oregon, Washington and Arizona, barring those in internment camps. The Supreme Court, in 1944, upheld the constitutionality of the exclusion orders, while noting that the provisions that singled out people of Japanese ancestry were outside the ambit of the proceedings. The United States Census Bureau also, allegedly assisted in the internment process by providing confidential neighborhood information on Japanese Americans. Its role was denied for decades, before finally being established in 2007.
