What is the solution set of |x – 3| > 5?

OpenStudy (andriod09):

Hey CSmith! The first thing you should do, is to make the absolute values go *poof* like so: \[|x-3|>5\] by doing this, you make the \[-3\] into a \[+3\] By plugging that into the equation, you would have \[x+3>5\] What do you think you should do next?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Maybe subtract 3 from both sides? @andriod09

OpenStudy (andriod09):

Yup! what would the equation look like then?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x>2

OpenStudy (andriod09):

There you go. Now you know that the value of X is greater than two. On a number line, it would look like this: (relate drawing below)
