help please!!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Two mechanics worked on a car. The first mechanic worked for 10 hours, and the second mechanic worked for 5 hours. Together they charged a total of 1425 . What was the rate charged per hour by each mechanic if the sum of the two rates was 170 per hour?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

give me a sec I need more brain juice

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okayy

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

lol you have 2 equations 10x + 5y = 1425 x + y = 170 Do you know how to solve a system of equations?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Mpinkham What is @johnweldon1993 is doing is exactly what is required to solve this problem.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i subtracted the equations and got 9x+4y=1255

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Not quite how to solve it There could be 2 ways to solve this....the elimination method...or the substitution method....I will be using the substitution method here alright?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okayy

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

It states that when you have 2 equations....you solve 1 equation for some variable meaning here....lets solve that 2nd equation for 'y' x + y = 170 how would we solve that equation for 'y'?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Iould do with another lesson in this stuff cuz I forgot

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y=-x+170

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

great! so now...we know what Y equals...we can now SUBSTITUTE that in for 'y' in the first equation 10x + 5y = 1425 replace 'y' with what we know 'y' equals 10x + 5(-x + 170) = 1425 what would we do next?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

10x-5y+850=1425

OpenStudy (anonymous):

meant x

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

remember......nvm you caught it :) okay so we have 10x - 5x + 850 = 1425 What next?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5x+850= 1425 then 5x=575

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

GREAT....and then x = ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

115

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

perfect....we now know what x equals....and we can put that into our second "original" equation to solve for 'y' x + y = 170 115 + y = 170 what is 'y'?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

55?

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

great.....so we have that mechanic 1 charges 115 an hour....and mechanic 2 charges 55 an hour.....and we can finally check it...by plugging those into that first original equation 10x + 5y = 1425 10(115) + 5(55) = 1425 is that a correct statement?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah!!! THANKS!!!!!!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if i need more help ill ask

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

anytime :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can u help again??? with the settting it up

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

of course :)
