Simplfy the exppresion x²+2x x²-1 ----- * ----- 4x+4 3x²+6x

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

\[\frac{ x(x+2) }{ 4(x+1) }*\frac{ (x-1)(x+1) }{ 3x(x+2) }\]

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

now cross cancel

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

:l

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok and i got x x-1 --- * ----- 4 3x

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

There you go :D

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

way to prove me wrong :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but thts not a answer chioce so what step do i have to do next lol and yea i know

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

multiply them?

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

Do you see any more common factors you can cancel out?

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

multiplying not adding :P

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

Or no...it's not addition lol whoops.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i was just bout to say tht

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

Hey, that's the ideal case: common denominator already done :-)

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

palmer's right.. as always

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

there's one more factor

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea x soo its x-1 ----- 12

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

@Luigi0210 I wish that statement was a bit truer, but thanks! :-)

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

Yup :)

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

\[\large \frac{\color{red}x(x-1)}{\color{red}{3x}*4}\]

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

No problem :)

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

Don't think I stole anyone's problem here, at least that wasn't the intent! I'm reminded of the old Emerson quote: "there's no limit to what can be accomplished if it doesn't matter who gets the credit." :-)

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

I was just kidddaannnggg

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

haha sure you were.. jk :P

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

^_____^

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

screw medals.. who wants metal? ha

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

But seriously, medal, schmedal, I like seeing someone who didn't understand something before we all "helped" come away understanding it. Especially the people who come in saying "I really suck at math, my teacher can't explain anything"!

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

I suck at math.. my teacher didn't explain much to us :l

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

but hey I got you guys :D right? :l

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

i wonder what he could be writing, lol.

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

next top author!

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

That's right! I think one of the most valuable aspects of OS (though sometimes it is confusing as well) is seeing multiple approaches to a problem. I had math teachers who were generally fine teachers, but you just saw one way to do the problem. I saw a simple fraction arithmetic trick the other day that never would have occurred to me, and it is so much better than what I've been doing all these years...but because it uses some algebra, you wouldn't ordinarily learn it because everyone learns fractions first. It's worth the occasional abuse reports that come from explaining the work too quickly and revealing an answer rather than making the poster sweat for each line...

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

I liked the supposed plot twist, btw :-)

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

Yay I got palmer! :D but what about Jhan? :l I got warned twice already -_-

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

But let's just say that a girl with as much facial hair as I have would have a tough time getting dates, even from math students :-)

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

Nice to know you have a beard. lololol. Yes you have me too, Luigi :P Palmer taught me.....word problems, lol.

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

I want a beard D: and yes! :D

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

I'm still learning how to explain from Miss Jhann there >.>

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

Lol. my explanations get too carried away, and often overlooked.

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

well I love your explanations ^_^

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

Well, the important thing is that you're doing it. Like most things, you get better with some experience. A very wise teacher of mine told me that his secret to really understanding the material was teaching it to someone else.

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

haha thanks! I cameto this website to refresh my basic math skills (algebra - word problems.., trig, geometry) :P And i've learned so much!

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

@whpalmer4 I've heard that before..

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

glad to hear :)

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

Quite possibly from me! He made a believer out of me, that's for sure. And like jb, I've picked up a lot from watching others here, both in how they approach explaining topics and learning new stuff!

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

You'd make a great teacher :)

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

Thanks! I've been practicing on my 10-year-old kid :-)

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

haha, too awesome.

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

yes you are Jhan :P and haha awesome, do you have any plans on teaching?

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

nah, no plans other than informal stuff here. Real teachers have a more difficult job, they can't (or shouldn't) just walk away from the students who aren't eager to learn. Working with people who want to learn is fun, though! I particularly enjoy figuring out how to explain something to someone who almost gets it, but just hasn't seen quite the right explanation to make it click.
