why do you get extraneous equations when solving rational equations

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Explain why it is important to check your answers when solving equations with rational expressions. ^original question

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

go for it @dumbcow xD

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

because you can't divide by zero is 1 reason example: haha having trouble coming up with rational equation with extraneous solution

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

Gave you one xD

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

thx \[\frac{1}{x-1}= \frac{3}{x+2}-\frac{6x}{(x-2)(x+2)}\] this yields 2 solutions: x=-2 and x=5/4 -2 is extraneous, because when you plug it in it makes the denominator 0 which is undefined

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

you know right away that x=1, x=2, x=-2 are all extraneous solutions because they cause function to be undefined

thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
