OpenStudy (ja1):

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

And enjoy your stay, @mathhelpnow. You can ask me if you need any help :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Open Study is a website where some people go to cheat, some people go to learn, and where some people just go when they're bored and want to answer random questions! :p lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh, o kay. also, how do I raise my score?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

By answering question, asking questions, getting medals, getting fans, etc., etc., etc.,

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Here is my take on it: The point of Open Study is to provide a web based platform for peer tutoring. The web based part of this is obvious. Peer tutoring may be new to some people. Peer tutoring is a system of non-professional tutoring where someone who has learned or gone before, sempai in Japanese, is showing things to the one who is learning or follows after, the kohai. In a sempai/kohai relationship, people are generally close in social standing and the more learned shares with the one who is seeking wisdom. They help the person do things properly, but do not do it for them. Well, here on open study we are largely users, not Ambassadors, Moderators, or Administrators, so we are of similar standing. Some of us know thins that other do not know, like how to solve a particular homework problem. We help others in need do their work, but do not do it for them. Through questions, nudges, and so on, we assist the person in doing their own work. Now, some people will do your work for you, with a full explanation. Some will answer your questions for you. However, those generally do not help you learn as much as when you participate. When you answer pieces and someone helps you fit it into the whole, the benefits to you are much greater. You can develop through Expert Learning, as opposed to Procedural Learning, which is a far better way to learn! So if you get people who show you an answer, they are actually making it HARDER for you to learn, not easier. When you are active it also makes you contemplate a problem more, which assists in consolidation. This is the process of taking short term memory and transferring it into long term. All of that, and more, is available to you here. All you have to do is tell people you want help working through a problem, and not just some set of steps or an answer.

It's for cheating, chatting, and trolling.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

MathSucks42, you say bluntly that "It's for cheating, chatting, and trolling." and I do agree that a lot of that goes on. However, the question was, "Whats openstudy supposed to be about?" not how it it abused.

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

@e.mccormick And in reality, @MathSucks42 trolls OpenStudy so much in the chat...

OpenStudy (preetha):

Mathsucks, It sounds like OpenStudy is not for you. If you want to get help here, you are welcome to stay and be nice. Follow the CodeofConduct. If you cheat, you will be suspended by OpenStudy and maybe by your school.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Why isn't it for me? I LOVE cheating and trolling. OS is the perfect place for that, I've noticed.

OpenStudy (poopsiedoodle):

She just explained it. -.-

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

poopsiedoodle You have mastered the obvious... sadly, MathSucks42 has not, OR, is trying to troll Preetha. Hmmm.... I am betting the second.

OpenStudy (poopsiedoodle):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Whats 'Hue'? @poopsiedoodle

OpenStudy (poopsiedoodle):

huehuehue

OpenStudy (anonymous):

umm, okay, the pic looks kinda creepy but that explains it....lol >.>

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well, what's a troll?

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troll But the modern meaning is someone who is being a particular type of jerk by bating people.
