How was the social hierarchy of the Middle Ages an outgrowth of feudalism?
When the Roman Empire collapsed, the lords of various localities exerted control over their territory. The system of feudalism that emerged out of this process was largely centered around the ownership of land. This had the result of creating a complex, hierarchy of social positions. Each position had a definite, although not necessarily static, position in society. Kings ruled vassals, vassals ruled knights, and serfs worked the land so that the higher orders could exist.
