How does crossing over add to the genetic diversity of sexually reproducing organisms? Select one of the options below as your answer: A. It involves segments of two homologous chromosomes trading places. B. It involves random segregation of the homologous chromosomes to each daughter cell. C. It involves fertilization of an ovum by any one out of millions of sperms.
B :]
The advantage of sexual reproduction is that it increseas diversity by mixing up genes in each generation. "Crossing over" of genes from one chromosome to another during meiosis (replication of chromosomes for sexual reproduction) is another way in which genetic material is remixed for the next generation.
First of all, you need to know what crossing-over is: when homologous chromosomes pair up in late prophase I or meiosis and form a tetrad (4 chromosomes). They come together so that they chromosoes become "entangled" at some portion. As they begin to pull apart these sections where they cross over begin to break apart and rearrange, which is the process known as crossing over. This allows for a new form of DNA to be created at some part of the chromosome allowing for a variety of combinations. This is what allows all of us to be so different from everyone.
