16 < 3x + 1 < 4 Part 1: Solve the inequality above. Part 2: Describe the graph of the solution.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no such thing

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[16<whatever <4\] implies \(16<4\) which is false there is no solution

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay so how did you come up with 16<4. I have to explain every step

OpenStudy (phi):

this 16 < 3x + 1 < 4 means 16 < 3x +1 and 3x + 1 < 4 you can simplify them: 16 < 3x + 1 add -1 to both sides: 16+ -1 < 3x + 1 + -1 (the 1 + -1 is 0 and 3x+0 is 3x, so you get: 15 < 3x divide both sides by 3: 15/3 < 3x/3 5 < x we can do the same for the other relation: 3x+1 < 4 becomes 3x < 3 and then x < 3 so you need x > 5 (x bigger than 5) and x < 3 (at the same time, x less than 3) which is not possible.
