How do you determine the truth value of a statement?
what kind of statement?
Math statement
well, the statement: 2+2 = 5 is false, but proving it false would have to rely upon simpler axioms to work out unless everyone involved is agreed that it is false
Can u explain that ne better?
well, to prove the statment i just made, we would have to work out some more basicer matters: such as: 1+1+1+1+...+1 = n , for a given set of "n" 1s this is true for n=1: 1 = 1 assume its true for some k 1+1+1+1+...+1 = k , for a given set of "k" 1s; is it true for a set of "k+1" 1s? add 1 to each side 1+1+1+1+...+1+1 = k+1 yes it is so, 2+2 is the same as writing: 1+1+1+1, we have "4" 1s therefore 2+2 = 4, not 5
there are a variety of proving methods: direct proofs stem from agreed upon axioms and thrms that have been proven true by such axioms proof by contradiction is to assume the outcome is something other than what its claimed to be, and prove that the contradiction is absurd. proof by induction ... which i just tried a stab at
