Explain how xylem, phloem, primary growth, and secondary growth of a maple make it strong enough for furniture.

thomaster (thomaster):

uhm thats kinda a summary of your last 3 questions :P Maple tree growns in length first (primary growth), then it grows in diameter (secondary growth) With secondary growth, xylem and phloem cells are made. they have double cell walls impregnated with lignin which make them hard and solid. Strong enough to make furniture out of the wood :)

Oh :o thank you c:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh, what exactly are xylem and phloem?

thomaster (thomaster):

they're types of transport tissue. Xylem transports water and minerals (which are absorbed at the roots) Phloem transports organic nutrients made in photosynthesis (sucrose).
