OpenStudy (jazzyfa30):

5 + 3^2(2-4)

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

\[\large \large 5 + 3^2(2-4)\] For this equation, you want to use PEMDAS. So parenthesis goes first, 2-4 is -2. So your equation should look like: \[\large \large 5 + 3^2 \times -2\] Next, you want to do exponent. 3^2 is 27. So your equation should look like: \[\large \large 5 + 27 \times -2\] Now you want to do multiplication. 27 x -2 is -54. \[\large \large 5 + -54 = \] Do you add or subtract? Well, when you see a + and a - sign together, you subtract. When you see a + + or a - -. you add. so 5 - 54 is -49. I hope this help! :) I think I did something wrong, wait a while after I fix my problem.

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

Ugh. Stupid mistake. \[\large \large 3^2 = 9\] So the equation should've look like: \[\large \large 5 + 9 \times -2\] 9 multiply by -2 is -18. -18 plus 5 is -13. So the answer is, -13! I hope this help!

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Do the parentheses first: 5 + 3^2(2-4) = 5 + 3^2(-2) Now do the power: = 5 + 9(-2) Next is the multiplication: = 5 + (-18) Finally add: = -13
