Energy density?

How can anyone know the amount of "stored" energy there is in a system... I mean, how can I relate the idea of energy density to Conservation of Energy, Work-Energy theorem, and Thermodynamics?

It's most commonly used to talk about energy stored in a field, like an electric field. If you bring two positive charges close together, they repel one another, so if you hold them there, there must be energy stored somewhere that will be turned into kinetic energy when you let go. That energy is stored in the electric field, and the amount of energy stored per unit volume is the energy density.
