In gel electrophoresis where do the small pieces go ? :/

OpenStudy (zale101):

The gel is made up of really large and branched molecules called polymers.

OpenStudy (zale101):

Gel electrophoresis is a technique used to separate mixtures like DNA and proteins.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes but then were do the small molecules of dna moves to do the stay in the bottom ?

OpenStudy (zale101):

. In gel electrophoresis, molecules with big charges are going to move faster. If a molecule charge is very small, the attraction is going to be small. This means the molecule is going to move slowly in the gel. If the molecule does not have a charge, it will not move.

Okaay thank you :)

OpenStudy (zale101):

Did i help ?

Yess a lot :)

thank youu :)

OpenStudy (abb0t):

They go to the bottom. Smaller pieces travel faster. Attraction to negative charge.

OpenStudy (abb0t):

Remember they go thru "holes" so are able to fit thru them.
