8=-12+k/-4

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

How far are you able to get on this?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Adding the 12 to the 8 that's it. I don't understand the fraction

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

So you did this: \[8=-12+\frac{k}{-4}\implies 20=\frac{k}{-4}\]OK. What would happen if you multiplied the whole thing by -4 at that point?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got -80

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-80=k

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

And the -4 on the other side canceled. Leaving you with just k. And that is it!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank!!!

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Because the -12 is out front, you add 12 first. If the -12 had been on top of the fraction, you would multiply by the -4 first. It all about taking steps to get the k alone.
