You want to get rid of the x or y to solve an equation with one variable. If you multiply both sides of the first equation with -3 and then add it to the 2nd equation, you will have an equation with y as the only variable. You can solve it and the find x from one of the first two equations.

Or you could divide the 2nd equation by 3 and then subtract it from the 1st equation to get rid of x, if you find that easier.
