What is the difference between an irrational number and a rational number. Give an example of each.

OpenStudy (nurali):

he word rational comes from"ratio". A rational number is a ratio of integers. By that I mean that any rational number can be written as: a/b where a and b are integers and b is not equal to zero. Irrational numbers are real numbers that are NOT rational. Examples of rational numbers: 1) 2/9 = .222222222... with 2s going on forever. This is called a repeating decimal. 2) -11/5 = -2.2 3) 9475945637 / 474629506 is a ratio of integers, very big integers. Examples of irrational numbers: 1) sqrt(2) 2) pi 3) cube root of 13
