- How did farming affect Native Americans? Be specific and explain in detail - Explain how the way of life of one Native American group suited its environment. Be specific and explain in detail
Well if you mean they're OWN farming then many Indians practiced cultivation, even the Anasazi cliff-dwellers in the desert. The farming tribes used their crops for trading purposes with other tribes, hunter/gatherer Indians. If you mean pioneer farming then the gradual encroachment of pioneers greatly impacted the land areas natives could use for hunting and religion. Many disputes and attacks occured on both sides. However, it was Sherman's concept to "starve" the indigenous people into submission, similar to his Civil War tactics in the South, reducing the buffalo herds to the point that the plains Indians had to relent and be transplanted onto reservations in order to survive. There is also speculation that the ancient plains tribes practiced "deforestation" using fire in the Great Plains areas to increase buffalo habitat. These plains eventually become fertile farmland for settlers.
