“Was It a Dream?” by Guy de Maupassant is written in the first person point of view. The decision to write in the first person gave me, as a read, an intimate look into the character's thoughts and feelings. My understanding of the character was shaped by these thoughts and feelings. For example, he says, "And fora whole year I have lived on her tenderness, on her caresses, in her arms, in her dresses, on her words..." which shows how deeply he cared for the person he lost. Then, when he says, " Happy is the man whose heart forgets everything that it has contained, everything that has passed before it, everything that has looked at itself in it, or has been reflected in its affection, in its love! How I suffer!", I learned how this character is tormented by the lost of his loved one. These two quotes were very personal and allowed me to understand, on some level, what the character was going through. The tragedy is complete after he reads his lover's tombstone (learning of her deception) and the last line reads, "It appears that they found me at daybreak, lying on the grave unconscious."
