Peter earned a wage increase of 15% . If he was previously making $9 per hour, how much more is Peter making per hour now?

If Peter is getting a wage increase, you can assume that he will be getting 100% of his previous wage, plus the increase of 15%. There are two ways you can approach this, one is to say that you have a combination problem: \(\small{15\%~ in~ decimal~ is ~0.15}\) wage + (0.15*wage) = new_wage OR you could look at this as a multiplication problem:\(\small{115\%~in~decimal~is~1.15}\) wage * 1.15 = new_wage Both give you the same answer.
