May someone teach me algorithm? I really want to learn this material; it is something I have been interested in since I was in the 8th grade when my class saw a movie on how mathematics were used to build a successful rocket. If someone can teach me step by step then I will give it my all to learn, for I am trying to build something myself.

OpenStudy (espex):

An algorithm is just a "method of doing" something. Do you have a specific topic of interest?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah, algorithm.

OpenStudy (espex):

An algorithm is a specific set of instructions for carrying out a procedure or solving a problem, usually with the requirement that the procedure terminate at some point. You can "create" an algorithm for connecting to the internet, posting online, or any task you can conceive. You could say that a cookbook is a collection of algorithms for food. We use various algorithms to teach children how to use a fork or to tie their shoes. The bedtime routine is an algorithm for getting a child to bed. To reiterate, an algorithm is just a collection of steps used to achieve a specific task. Would you like to study algorithms of culinary science, computer science, biology, chemistry, mathematics, sociology, psychiatry, recycling, agriculture, power distribution, or some other specific field of study?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, actually. I want to learn computer science, power distribution and some chemistry as well as some mathematics.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But I get where you are going, if you have more then please, carry on.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm getting real interested.

OpenStudy (espex):

I was mostly trying to convey that the term "algorithm" refers to a process. Each of those topics you mention have their own algorithms to accomplish a variety of tasks within the discipline. You should take a look at the OCW being offered and see which topic grabs your attention with the greatest force and start there. thank you, I really needed this.

OpenStudy (espex):

You're welcome.
