Someone beat me to my favorite answer on standard formatting! And there is a certain irony in lining to the Purdue QWL with their owl logo on OpenStudy. Hehe. The site french_dame linked is excellent for APA, MLA, and even generic writing tips.

I also love using the add-on for Microsoft Word called Perrla. It has saved me so much time and I've learned a lot about formatting by using it. I also find it nice because it stores your sources for you so if you write a paper about a similar topic, and you want to use a source you did before, you already have all the citation completed and ready to use. It is free to try, then you pay for it in the long run but it is worth every penny. I started out with the free trial, then I purchased a 1 year license, and after that year, I knew there was no going back for me and purchased the lifetime license instead of renewing for another year. It updates when APA or MLA changes and they are constantly improving the addon.

I just use Son of a Citation Machine and normal formatting tools. They actually have templates for the APA, MLA, and more. There is a citation saving feature inside Word already, and if I do the work with say a \(LaTeX\) template in Texmaker, it can be even more powerful as well as save all the citations for later.
