The most basic explanation would be that the French were much more flamboyant in height and structure than the English. They consisted mainly of flying buttresses which were visible from the interior and exterior, ribbed vaults, and pointed arches. This creates a soaring masonry, opposed to the English. The English Cathedrals were long and somewhat delicate compared to the French.
