Solve the system of equations using substitution... I can't figure out how to do this one since it's not just y='s I'm lost. Please help!! 2x-4y=8 x=-2y

OpenStudy (mathteacher1729):

One of them is x = -2y The key is to substitute x = -2y into 2x - 4y = 8 and then solve for y. :)

I get that i'm supposed to substitute x=-2y but when i do I don't get x or y alone so i'm not sure how to really solve for x or y.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or maybe i just did it wrong, let me try again. I keep making stupid mistakes

OpenStudy (mathteacher1729):

What do you get when you substitute x - -2y into 2x-4y = 8 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok, I figured it out. Idk know why but i keep making silly mistakes for some reason when i was plugging it in I plugged it in for y instead of x so that was messing me up. Sometimes I just need someone to let me talk it out.. Thanks so much for your help :)

No problem, I'm glad you figured it out! Sometimes taking through the solution is the best way to let your brain figure it out. It happens to me in my office frequently. My coworkers and I will pass around interesting problems and talk them through when we get stuck.
