If two dice are rolled, find the probability of rolling two 6's.

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

Probability is the number of 'good' outcomes divided by the total number of outcomes. So, with a pair of dice, how many possible rolls are there?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

No... that's just for one die. What about a pair?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

12?

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

no... it's 6x6 = 36 :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhhhh so then what?

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

Well, of the possible rolls, how many of them are a pair of sixes? Say, possible rolls are 1 and 3 3 and 5 2 and 2 etc. How many of the possible rolls are 6 and 6 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Umm how would you comfigure this as a fraction?

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

Not yet... for now, I'm just asking how many of the 36 possible rolls are a pair of sixes...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1 right?

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

yup. So... number of 'good' outcomes divided by the total number of outcomes... that's the probability

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You lost me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait 1/36?

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

Yes. Precisely :)
