Which set of three segments can form a triangle? 15, 22, 6 11, 19, 8 17, 9, 10 16, 20, 4

OpenStudy (raden):

in a traingle, the sum of two sides always greater than the third side look at the first choice. 15,22,6 15+22 > 6 (true) 22+6 > 15 (true) 15+6 > 22 (false) so, it is can not be a triangle

OpenStudy (raden):

*triangle

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so you add the first two sides then what do you do after that

OpenStudy (raden):

just correction all inequalities, if one of them not satisfies then cancel be a triangle

OpenStudy (raden):

what do u think for B ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont no im confused

OpenStudy (raden):

11, 19, 8 11+19 > 8 (obviously, it is true) 19 + 8 > 11 (true too) nah, 11+8 > 19, true or false ?

OpenStudy (raden):

11 + 8 > 19 19 > 19 (true or false ?)

OpenStudy (raden):

this site might useful http://www.regentsprep.org/Regents/math/geometry/GP7/LTriIneq.htm

OpenStudy (anonymous):

false....

OpenStudy (raden):

yes, so for B you dont have a triangle

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh i get it now

OpenStudy (raden):

what is your choice then ..

OpenStudy (raden):

C or D ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

D?

OpenStudy (raden):

16 + 4 > 20 it is false, doesnt it ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah... so c?

OpenStudy (raden):

17 + 9 > 10 (true) 17 + 10 > 9 (true) 9 + 10 > 17 (true) all inequality be true, so it can be a triangle

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay thank you so much!

OpenStudy (raden):

you're welcme
