is that supposed to be absolute value sign

OpenStudy (espex):

You need to get the denominators the same before you can subtract them. Since 3 is a factor of 6, I would suggest that you use that as your common denominator. What would you have to multiply 3 by to get 6? Recall that you will need to multiply the numerator and denominator by that number. (any number over itself is 1)
