What is a sigmoid phenomenon?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Imagine this: If there is a lot of food, and places to live, in an environment, then the number of organisms (plants and animals) that live in the environment will go up, quickly. Since there's a lot of food, and places to live, plants and animals have more opportunity to reproduce. Make children. So, the number of plants and animals goes up, really fast. Does that make sense? -------------- BUT what happens when the amount of food and habitats DECREASES? What happens when, all of a sudden, there isn't enough food or habitats for everyone? If that happens, then the increase in the population will SLOW down. Because there's not enough food, or places to live. --------- Everything I just described, that's the Sigmoid Phenomenon.
