OpenStudy (andriod09):

how do you solve this equation (in the comments)

OpenStudy (andriod09):

how do you solve: \[3y + \frac{1}{4} y=26\] I can't remember

OpenStudy (bahrom7893):

add the y terms

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

What is 3 + 1/4?

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

3y and 1/4y are like terms because they both only have one y. So you can combine them. :)

OpenStudy (andriod09):

\[3\frac{1}{4}\]

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

Make sure to add the y. :)

OpenStudy (andriod09):

How would i find the y then?

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

So your equation looks like: \[\large \large 3 \frac{ 1 }{ 4 }y = 26\] To solve for y, you want to divide both side by 3 1/4. 3 1/4 y divided by 3 1/4 would give you 1y or just y. 26 divided by 3 1/4 would give you a number. That number would be equal to y.

OpenStudy (andriod09):

That makes NO sense to me what so ever. >.<

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

How so? Explain what's confusing you. :)

OpenStudy (andriod09):

you can't divide a fractional number by a fraction, can you?

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

You can. You can convert the fractions into a decimals. Then you can divide the decimal by the decimal. Make sense? o.o.

OpenStudy (andriod09):

Nvm, i got it.

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

Or you can use the method, KFC. (Keep Flip Change)

OpenStudy (andriod09):

The answer is 8.

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

KCF* (Keep Change Flip) Thinking about that chicken. >_>

OpenStudy (andriod09):

Haha. easy to get confused with.

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

Correct. :)

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

You can check your work by plugging it in: 3(8) + 1/4(8) = 26 3 * 8 = 24 1/4 * 8 = 2 24 + 2 = 26 So the answer is 8. :)

OpenStudy (andriod09):

Question: check my work please: \[5[1- 2(x+2)=4x\]\[5[1-2x-4]=4x\]\[5-10x-20=4x\]\[-15=14x\] Is that right?

OpenStudy (andriod09):

@GoldPhenoix Little help please?

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

At: 5[ 1 - 2x - 4] = 4x You still didn't finish the one in the parenthesis. You have like terms that you can combine.

OpenStudy (andriod09):

oh, so it would be -3 instead of 4?

OpenStudy (andriod09):

I got 2=6x, is that right?

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

Yes. 1-4 = -3. So after fixing that mistake, your equation should look like: 5 [-2x -3] = 4x

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

Now what would you do next?

OpenStudy (andriod09):

oh fail. okay. I get it. after that, you would of gotten: \[-10x-15=4x\] right?

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

Correct!

OpenStudy (andriod09):

That would still leave me with 15=14x thought.

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

Ooh. My bad. >_>

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

So yes, you are correct. Make sure to divide both side by 14. to get x. :)

OpenStudy (andriod09):

but what would it be though?

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

Hmm. 14x / 14 = x -15 / 14 = -1.07 (Rounded) Or you can just leave it as: \[\large \large \frac{ -15 }{ 14 } = x\]

OpenStudy (andriod09):

thanks.
